Figure 14: Paleofacies of the late Early Cretaceous spanning deposition of the Shu’aiba, Biyadh, Nahr Umr, Burgan, and Kazhdumi formations, and their regional equivalents [MFS K70 to intra-K120]. A marked late-Aptian regional unconformity and sedimentary hiatus separates rocks of Aptian age (e.g. Shu’aiba Formation) from those of Albian age (e.g. Nahr Umr). Well-defined salt domes in the southern Gulf are attributed to halokinetic movements of the Precambrian Hormuz Salt due to structural reactivation.
