INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS DURING 1996

The following (from AAPG Explorer, January 1997) is a listing of "selected major discoveries of 1996" by country, operator, well name, basin, and production reports. Data compiled by Petroconsultants, of Geneva, Switzerland. An asterisk denotes offshore.

Three illustrations present a long-range view of production and reserves. The sustainability of current oil production (Table 1) shows that USA, Canada, and UK are prominent among countries that can sustain current production for less than 10 years, whereas Saudi Arabia, Russia, and Iran are among those countries that can sustain current production for less than 100 years and Iraq and Kuwait can sustain current production for more than 100 years. Current production from Saudia Arabia approaches 3 billion barrels annually, and USA and Russia produce approximately 2.4 and 2.3 billion barrels, respectively (Figure 1). Proved reserves in Saudi Arabia are more than 150 billion barrels, and those in Iraq and Kuwait are approximately 90 and 80 billion barrels, respectively (Figure 2).
