Geochemical evaluation of oil samples from the western Niger Delta was carried out, with the aim of assessing the pronenance and maturity of the oils on the basis of biomarkers. Some stigmastanes were identified in the oils. Comparison of distribution and ratios of stigmastanes and other biomarkers indicates that they are useful as source indicators as well as maturity indicators. A prepondrance of 20R epimer of stigmastane indicates a strong terrestrial contribution. While relative abundance of 20S stigmastane indicates mature oils. This study shows that distribution of stigmastanes will be a useful tool to assess quality of oils.
