Multidisciplinary Approach for Assessing the Unconventional Shale Gas Prospect of Cambay, Assam Arakan, Krishna Godavari and Damodar Basins, India

Abstract

The success of the Barnett Shale play in Texas has activated in search for shale gas resources across the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia. Shale deposits in India have a large geographical distribution. However, no commercial gas production from shale reservoirs has been reported in India yet. The present paper is focused on integrated sedimentology, geochemical, petrophysical and reservoir characterization of Eocene shales in the Cambay basin, Permian shales of Krishna Godavari and Damodar Basins. Core and Drill cuttings of depth ranges of 1400 – 1450 m and 2110- 2123 m from the Kalol and Cambay Formations (Cambay Basin), 200-700m from Barren Measures Formation (Damodar Basins) and >2000m from Kommugudam Formation (Krishna Godavary Basin) respectively were evaluated. The shales were analyzed for gas generation potential using the Rock Eval Pyrolysis technique, scanning electron microscopy, BET and microcomputer tomography. Based on TOC, hydrogen index (HI) and Tmax, the analyzed shales were found to be gas prone Type II and III kerogen with fair to excellent oil and gas generation potential.
