ABSTRACT: Green Canyon Block 205: A Geologic and Development Overview

Chevron USA and Exxon currently are evaluating development plans for a large discovery in the Green Canyon block 205 unit. It is located 85 miles from shore in 2500' to 2800' of Water. The primary pay sands lie on the east flank of a north-south trending salt cored anticline and consist of lower Pleistocene and upper Pliocene turbidites. Deposition was influenced by a large growth fault which partially rims the structure and provides an updip seal for the lower Pleistocene reservoirs. These reservoirs vary from massive, blocky sands to laminated sand-shale sequences that fine upwards. Seismic amplitude anomalies are associated with reservoirs containing hydrocarbons and 3-D seismic data have been used to define their areal extent. Deepwater operation costs are extremely high and detai ed and accurate reservoir characterization is critical to making sound economic decisions. Sand quality and reservoir continuity are two of the most important characteristics to determine and these characteristics directly affect production parameters such as recovery factors, aquifer support ratios, and therefore reserves.
