The Khuff Formation is superbly exposed in the central and northern Oman Mountains. However, the outcrops are poorly known and they remain largely undocumented in the public domain. This neglect is remarkable given that these are amongst the best and most accessible exposures of the world's largest gas reservoir (the Khuff contains 15-20% of global non-associated gas reserves).

The aim of this talk is to discuss selected features of the Khuff as seen in four outcrop reference sections. The issues I will be focusing on include:

• Cycle stacking patterns and sequence architecture
• Characterisation of systems tracts
• The mid-Khuff lowstand
• Base-K2 drowning
• Evidence for end-Khuff tectonism
• End-Khuff grainstones - a topmost Khuff sweet zone
• Biostratigraphic resolution - potential for an integrated biozonation scheme

This series of vignettes demonstrates the value of fieldwork, and will hopefully serve as a stimulus for further outcrop studies.
