System – An Onshore Sultanate of Oman Case Study

Abstract
In North Oman, the geological setting is very complex, it includes strike slip fault
zones rooted in Cambrian Ara formation (mainly salt), having vertical offset of up to two Km (Van de Rijzen et al. 2013). With this kind of major
fault
juxtaposition, young low density sediments (claystones, mudstones, shales) are placed against high density compact rocks like dolomite carbonates at shallow depth. However, in the deep, salt is placed against carbonates and sandstones. This creates large lateral velocity contrasts all along the
fault
plane.
