SCHUH, FRANK J., Drilling Technology, Inc., Plano, TX
Interest in horizontal
drilling has exploded at a rate
well
above even the most optimistic projections. Certainly, this technique will not end with the Bakken and Austin Chalk plays. However, future reservoirs will undoubtedly require much more complicated
well
designs and multi-disciplined technical interaction than has been used so far. The
horizontal
drilling costs are too high to permit resolving of all the technical issues by trial and error. A multi-disciplinary team approach will be required in order for
horizontal
drilling to achieve its economic potential.
